Meet the Founder
The story of Community Threads began with one person's vision to weave compassion into the fabric of our community.

A Personal Calling
Sarah Johnson founded Community Threads in 2015 after experiencing firsthand how a simple act of kindness can change everything. Growing up in Fredericksburg, Sarah watched her single mother work multiple jobs to provide for their family. One winter, when Sarah needed a coat for school, a neighbor anonymously left a beautiful handmade coat on their doorstep.
"That coat wasn't just warmth," Sarah recalls. "It was dignity. It was someone seeing us, caring about us, and taking the time to create something beautiful just for me. I never forgot that feeling."
Years later, while working as a social worker, Sarah noticed a gap in local services. Families could access food assistance and housing support, but quality clothing—especially items made with care and dignity—was harder to find. She started small, hosting monthly clothing swaps in her garage and teaching herself to knit.
What began as a grassroots effort quickly grew as volunteers joined her vision. Local crafters donated handmade blankets. Neighbors contributed gently used clothing. Within two years, Community Threads had outgrown three locations and was serving hundreds of families annually.
Our Mission & Values
Dignity First
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and compassion. We provide services without judgment, creating a welcoming environment where all feel valued.
Quality Matters
We believe those facing hardship deserve the same quality items anyone would want. From handcrafted blankets to professional attire, we give our best.
Community Powered
We're stronger together. Volunteers, donors, and those we serve are all valued members of our community family, each contributing to our shared mission.
Our Journey
The Beginning
Sarah starts hosting monthly clothing swaps in her garage. 15 families attend the first event.
Growing Support
30 volunteers join the cause. Community Threads moves to a donated storefront and becomes an official 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Expanding Impact
The handcrafted items program launches. Volunteer crafters create over 500 blankets, hats, and scarves in the first year.
Rising to Meet Need
During the pandemic, Community Threads adapts with curbside pickup and home deliveries. Services double to meet increased community need.
New Facility
Community Threads moves to its current 5,000 sq ft facility with dedicated crafting space, climate-controlled storage, and private shopping areas.
Thriving Community Hub
200+ active volunteers, 850+ families served annually, and a vision to expand services throughout Virginia.
"Every person who walks through our doors deserves to feel seen, valued, and cared for. Community Threads isn't just about clothing—it's about restoring dignity, building connections, and reminding each other that we all belong to this community family."
